The former manager of Tottenham Hotspur and England, Glenn Hoddle, believes that Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has to find an alternative way to make his 3-4-2-1 system in Old Trafford.

United suffered the ninth defeat against Amorim’s term on Sunday and lost 1-0 against Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Reds are now 15 in the Premier League table after they have only accumulated 29 points from their opening games. You only won 14 points from 14 games under Amorim.

The United head coach immediately changed the formation of the team to his preferred 3-4-2-1 system after his appointment in November. United players, however, have difficulty adapting to the new system.

Despite the demand for him to try another system, Amorim has made it clear that he will not give up his principles. And in Hoddle’s opinion, the United boss must find an alternative way to get the system up and running, which refer to the huge gaps that are exposed in the center of the midfield.

“I see mistakes in some tactical things that he does in this form with this group of players,” said Hoddle. “So if it doesn’t suit you, you are the question: ‘Will you change? Will we play with a back four? Will we go differently so that we can press together?’

“Today they were too crooked and there was a simple outcome for Tottenham; they had too much space on the ball, especially in the first half. ‘Do you want to change’ is the question, not ‘should we dismiss him?’

“It won’t come in. He needs two or three windows. He said that he works for his players and he wants to protect his players.

“Players love to win football games. Is that the best way? See that.

“You have to adapt, you have to change. If you want to play [Joshua] Circle from the front, you have to protect this position around it, so it means playing a back four and playing differently and a little differently if you get that.

“There are so many questions. You play in the background with three, with five in the background when you defend yourself where you cannot get pressure.

“Most teams are now playing five in the background, they will fall and press at halftime and difficult to beat. It’s different, but I don’t see that. I see half a team between pressing and back … Push five back.

“You are more numerous and you cannot press. There is a massive one you want to trust.
